“A splendid ‘Porgy and Bess’”
──The New York Times

As a prelude to this year’s Freespace Jazz Fest, we present a screening of the American opera masterpiece, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, from the Metropolitan Opera’s MET Live in HD series.

Written in 1935 – and featuring familiar arias like Summertime, It Aint Necessarily So and I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’ Porgy and Bess focuses on the joys and struggles of the residents of a Charleston tenement in 1920s South Carolina.

The screening presents James Robinson’s widely acclaimed stage production, which premiered at the English National Opera in 2018 and at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019. Transporting audiences to the fictional “Catfish Row” on the Charleston waterfront, the production is vibrant with the music, dancing, triumphs and heartbreak of its characters. David Robertson conducts a dynamic award-winning cast, featuring bass-baritone Eric Owens as Porgy and soprano Angel Blue as Bess, and an all-star ensemble that includes Golda Schultz, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker and Ryan Speedo Green.

Before the screening on 1 November 2020 (Sunday), special guest Angel Blue – acclaimed soprano who stars as “Bess” in the MET production – joins us live online for a 15-minute talk. Don’t miss this exclusive chance to hear from one of American opera’s leading divas.

Thanks to popular demand, we are adding an additional screening on 13 December 2020 (Sunday).
