This May and June, the renowned Shanghai Pingtan Troupe joins us in the Tea House Theatre with Gao Bowen performs Blossoms, a four-part adaptation of the award-winning novel by Shanghainese author Jin Yucheng presented in the traditional Pingtan form. Singing in Mandarin, Shanghainese and Suzhou dialects, artist Gao Bowen brings to life an intricate tale and showcases the unique charm of this narrative musical tradition. Each part of the adaptation is performed on consecutive evenings, with two complete four-night runs over the programme period.

A form of musical storytelling or shuochang, Pingtan originated in the Jiangnan region of China and combines singing, musical accompaniment and comic dialogue.
