This December, the Xiqu Centre presents the first event in our new Rare Classics programme – a series highlighting the regional diversity of Chinese opera through a selection of ancient genres rarely seen in Hong Kong.

Shanxi Opera Excerpts showcases the art of bangzi or clapper opera, an ancient and influential xiqu genre known for its lively singing style and use of rhythmic wooden clappers. Presented by the artists of four Shanxi troupes, the excerpts showcase the distinct styles of four prominent regional genres: Pu opera, Jin opera, Beilu bangzi and Shangdang bangzi. A host also offers an introduction and insight into traditional skills and gestures.

Join us in the Tea House Theatre for the rare chance to admire some less familiar classic treats in a traditional and intimate setting.
