In April 2020, Sydney-based choreographer, filmmaker and installation artist Sue Healey partners with artists from Hong Kong, Japan and Australia to present ON VIEW: Panorama at Freespace. This cross-disciplinary exposé of how dancers present themselves to the camera, the audience, and each other, is the culminating work of Sue’s three-part Asia-Pacific project series: ON VIEW: Live Portraits (Australia, 2015), ON VIEW: HONG KONG (2017) and ON VIEW: Japan (2019).

Through a live dance performance and a dance film installation exhibition, the cross-cultural production interrogates ideas about portraiture and identity, and the dynamics of seeing and being seen, revealing how the presence of the body in performance leaves its indelible mark, and how the body is influenced by the culture within which it finds itself.

The finale performance includes artists from Hong Kong, Japan and Australia, and incorporates light and shadow interactions with near life-size thread sculptures created by Australian portrait sculpture artist Jane Théau. The production is co-commissioned by Freespace and Aichi Prefectural Art Theatre, Japan, and co-produced by Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No.1, Japan and Performance Space, Australia.
