The melodies of traditional Cantonese opera are familiar to most people living in Hong Kong. Played on TV, in movies and on the streets, they are part of the soundtrack of everyday life. Despite this, many people know little about the origins and composition of the art form.
In this talk, Prof Yuen Siu-fai, a veteran Cantonese opera artist with a career spanning six decades, offers a detailed introduction to the forms and features of Cantonese opera music. Through a selection of musical excerpts, and sharing about his professional career and recent academic research on erhuang – an aria singing style that has influenced a number of regional xiqu genres, including Peking opera and Cantonese opera – Prof Yuen offers insight into the characteristics of the local form of xiqu.
