The two half-day experience invites seniors aged 60 or above and their younger generations to participate in a series of Cantonese opera activities together. Get a taste of a beloved traditional art form while exchanging views, culture, and memories between generations.

“Intergenerational Xiqu Journey” is divided into three parts:

Xiqu Centre Guided Tour: Take a walk down memory lane and peer into the future with an introductory tour of the Xiqu Centre. The itinerary is tailored for participants from different generations to trade stories about the city. Discover the Xiqu Centre’s architectural and design features and learn fascinating facts about Cantonese opera.

Xiqu Movement Workshop: Get up close and personal with professional performers in a workshop on how body movements and props enhance stories in Cantonese Opera. Learn basic Cantonese opera movements from xiqu performers in a fun and accessible way for all abilities.

Tea House Theatre Performance: Sit back and enjoy a one-hour performance of popular Cantonese opera excerpts in the unique Tea House Theatre. The programme showcases a range of interactive elements, musical styles, and delightful tunes that will entertain Cantonese opera newcomers and experts alike.

We welcome organisations serving seniors and their younger family members, relatives, or caregivers to participate as a group. Participants will visit the Xiqu Centre twice for the programme. Programme is free of charge.

Target Participants:
For seniors aged 60 or above and their younger generations/ caregivers to join in pairs. Suggested age difference in each pair of participants is 15 years and above.

About the Tutor:

Xie Xiaoyu

Xie XiaoyuXie Xiaoyu graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Xie is an experienced performer and a specialist in dan (female) roles.
