This August, we are delighted to host the GuoGuang Opera Company from Taiwan, who return to Hong Kong with their original Peking opera production Dowager Xiao-Zhuang and Dorgon.

Since 1995, GuoGuang Opera Company has become known for innovative, contemporary productions of traditional and new Peking opera. Recent original works, including The Golden Cangue, One Hundred Years On Stage, Sunlight after Snowfall and The Painting of 18 Lohans, have won both critical acclaim and the hearts of young audiences.

Based on Qing dynasty folklore, the royal tragedy Dowager Xiao-Zhuang and Dorgon explores the depths of the human condition in a production that reflects the new aesthetics of Peking opera in Taiwan.

Synopsis

When Emperor Shunzhi takes the throne and begins to investigate the treasonous dealings of his predecessor, his mother, Yu-er, the Empress Dowager Xiao-Zhuang, is forced to remember the painful past...

As the granddaughter of the Chief of the Khorchin Mongols, the young Xiao-Zhuang is forced into marriage with the Manchurian crown prince Huang Taiji – an arrangement designed to establish peace between the two peoples. On her journey to Manchuria to meet her future husband, however, she falls secretly in love with the young man sent to escort her, Huang Taiji’s younger half-brother Dorgon.

After the death of the Manchurian Emperor, Huang Taiji takes his place as ruler. As a trusted soldier, Dorgon leads a number of successful battles, helping to secure Huang Taiji’s position and power. Meanwhile, Xiao-Zhuang becomes the mother of a son and two daughters.

When Huang Taiji’s life is cut short, Dorgon seeks to take power himself. But his succession is challenged. To settle the matter without bloodshed, Xiao-Zhuang intervenes and declares that her son Shunzhi should take the throne. Acquiescing, Dorgon is made the official escort and protector of both Shunzhi and Xiao-Zhuang. Forced to live in close proximity, and with animosity growing between nephew and uncle, the secret love between Xiao-Zhuang and Dorgon weighs heavy on them both…
