The Experimental Chinese Opera Series presents new and original works that transcend the traditional artistic boundaries of Chinese opera practices – offering fresh interpretations, shorter performance lengths and innovative narratives and presentation techniques.

After the first series in 2017, this year’s programme includes a re-run of the Xiqu Centre’s first commissioned production, the experimental Cantonese opera Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), as well as the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe’s experimental Kunqu Opera The Chairs, adapted from Eugène Ionesco’s 1952 Theatre of the Absurd play Les Chaises, and the experimental Yue Opera Destiny of Rebirth by the Shanghai Yue Opera Group.

The Experimental Chinese Opera Series marks the second of our exchange performance showcases, and our continued exploration of new paths of artistic development.
