Farewell My Concubine (New Adaptation), Xiqu Centre’s first-ever commissioned work, features a blend of Cantonese opera traditions and bold innovations, and sets out to blaze a new trail for this centuries-old art form. Contemporary melodies and vocal styles are incorporated into the music, while the traditional minimalistic “one table, two chairs” stage setup is complemented by a modern lighting design. In this reimagining of the historic tragedy, the story is told from the perspective of warlord Xiang Yu. The linear narrative follows his downfall, from his return to the military campsite and the siege, to his final farewell to his concubine and subsequent suicide, with every scene pushing our hero toward a deeper state of despair.

The production is awarded the Best Experimental Xiqu Award at the China (Beijing) Performing Arts Expo in 2017.
