Created collaboratively by local interdisciplinary artist Kingsley Ng and graduate arts students at the Hong Kong Baptist University, the participatory art experience Beyond Words brings together participants with or without hearing impairments in a communicative art experience where the audience takes centre stage.
As active protagonists, participants bring along three personal items – something that represents themselves, something edible that tastes like where they come from, and something “useless” that they are unable to part with – and share their stories in silent verbal and non-verbal ways. By encouraging the use of writing, signing, taste and touch, the event opens up new perspectives on inclusiveness and communication.
This programme is part of the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University research project “Hacking Capitalism: Expanding Socially Engaged Art Through Alternative Art Economies and Entrepreneurship.” After the event, participants will be invited to fill out a questionnaire/take part in interviews. Please feel free to opt out if you wish.
